Commemoration of the International Day of Parliamentarism, June 30 – July 1, León

This global Conference, to be held in León from June 30 to July 1, shall bring together the Speakers of the EU Parliaments and other invited countries, and will inaugurate the Spanish Presidency. Its goal is to commemorate the International Day of Parliamentarism, stressing the historical roots of parliamentarism; highlight the key role played by Parliaments in the promotion of the development of democracy worldwide and the value of parliamentary institutions faced with the new challenges and threats to democracy, as well as to show the deep roots of Spanish parliamentarism and particularly the place held in this sense by the Cortes de León, set up in 1188 and which, according to UNESCO, represent the oldest documentary manifestation of parliamentarism in history. 

Speakers from 50 countries worldwide are expected to attend this global Conference, among them the Speakers of the EU Parliaments, the candidate countries and the Speakers of countries with a close inter parliamentary cooperation.
