The Cortes Generales will host the Inter-parliamentary Conference on Stability, Economic Coordination and Governance in the European Union (EU) on 26 and 27 October, within the framework of the parliamentary dimension of the Spanish Presidency of the European Union.
The Speaker of the Upper House, Pedro Rollán, will inaugurate the conference on 26 October at 11 a.m. The Speaker of the Congress of Deputies, Francina Armengol, will give the closing address.
The Chairperson of the European Parliament Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs, Irene Tingali, will also address the opening session of the conference.
As part of the conference, four sessions will be held covering the evolution of, and challenges facing, the economic governance of the European Union.
First session: The challenges of government and the economic recovery of the European Union in the international context.
On 26 October, at 11 a.m., the opening session of the conference will be held, covering the challenges of government and economic recovery of the European Union.
The session will include an address from the Head of Cabinet of the European Commissioner for Economy, Fabrizio Balassone; the Chairperson of the European Parliament Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs, Irene Tingali; and Researcher from the Elcano Royal Institute, Enrique Feás. This first session will be moderated by Deputy Celso Delgado.
Second session: Architecture of the new governance.
The second session, which begins at 3.30 p.m. on 26 October, will focus on the medium-term structural budgetary plans and specific net spending routes for each country. Sustainability of debt and fiscal prudence within the framework of the European Union.
This session will feature addresses from the Director of the International Economics and Euro Area Department of the Bank of Spain, Javier Pérez; Member of the European Parliament, Esther de Lange; and Cabinet Expert to the Vice-President for an Economy that Works for the People, Pim Lescrauwaet.
Third session: Integration of the social dimension in economic governance.
On Friday 27 October, the third session will begin at 9.00 a.m. under the title “Integration of the social dimension in economic governance”, featuring an address from the Chairperson of the Economic and Social Council of Spain, Antón Costas.
Fourth session: Open strategic autonomy.
The final session of the conference, to be held on 27 October from 11.30 a.m., will see the participation of the Vice-President of the European Commission, responsible for strategic foresight, Maros Sefcovic; the Secretary of State for Economy of the Spanish Government, Gonzalo García; and the Chairperson of the Spanish National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC), Cani Fernández.
Following that, from 1.15 p.m., the Speaker of the Congress of Deputies, Francina Armengol, will give the closing address of the Inter-parliamentary Conference on Stability, Economic Coordination and Governance in the EU.
